First Birthday as a MRS

Welcome back to Columbus, OH...you are now married and one year older...so many friends and family to catch up with...how should I start? Oh, eating at restaurants I have on my ever changing list...seems like a plan...and so my Birthday week began....

Birthday day...lunch with sister...Common Wealth Sandwich 1437 N High St Columbus OH

This new sandwich shop reminds me of a NYC establishment. To say that the focus is primarily on the food would be an understatement considering they do not even have a bathroom (no joke...my sister and I were directed to use the Columbus Public Library next door). My sis and I ordered the same sandwich, which looking back seems foolish! A missed opportunity to order two different sandwiches to split...duh! My over served brain is lacking the name of the sandwich, but it consisted of wile mushrooms, arugula, goat cheese and a fig spread. I will say the sandwich was delicious. I only found two issues...1. it came served on white (sourdough bread) where I usually opt for a whole grain bread and I believe they actually have that as an option but it was not advertised well and 2. the sandwich was unnecessarily greasy. After sharing silly honeymoon stories, pictures, and catching up on what I have missed on the 614 scene from the 7 days I was in Mexico, I looked at my sis and said "We didn't get french fries and that is stupid." For anyone that knows me knows I struggle with stomach issues, but I also struggle with my obsession with french fries! So, where I follow most physician advice (ie. drink plenty of water, eat fruits and veg, workout, stretch, etc.) I throw caution to the wind when it comes to french fries! Elisa-also commonly referred to as "E" (I guess I will expose her identity now), without hesitation marched up to the counter and said "we would like the mixed fries please." Yea, that's right sweet potato and regular in one...my mouth was watering! The lady asked "which sauce would you like." E looked back at me, saw the stressed look on my face, and turned back to the lady and said "we'll take all three of them please." All I can say is...heaven! I totally recommend their fries and to try all of the sauces, but honestly the spud sticks didn't even need the sauces.

Birthday Dinner with the Mr. and Leslie at Tora 1330 N Hamilton Rd. Columbus OH 43230

I am thinking I should make a "KEY" on this blog for readers to use as a reference to identify the many characters of my life. My family dynamic is freaking confusing, so just keep that in mind. However, back when I was a snobby 5th grader (I am still snobby, just older now) life blessed me with a step mom that treated Elisa and I as her own from day one. She is still very much in my life and even better, she is exactly one mile down the road from me! Leslie always does things in her own style. Birthdays are always kicked off with a toast, appetizers, and special napkins. Her attention to detail is one of the many qualities that make her so special.

It is my understanding that Tora is owned by the same owners of Hama at Easton. The menu is HUGE and features sushi, bento, and hot Asian inspired dishes. I had actually tried Tora before, but it was after a long night of drinking where the only thing that truly sounded good to me was a fountain Sprite (the ultimate hangover cure), so that is not a fair dining experience judgement. I know most Ohioans will scoff at this, but I am not one for sushi rolls and traditionally order sashimi. This time, all three of us ordered the sashimi bibim mab (sushi rice and salad topped with assorted sashimi). I wouldn't rave about this dish, but I will say that the fish was fresh and especially after being stuck with resort food for an entire week...freshness was an absolute MUST! My one complaint...fake crab meat (as I type those two words, horror music plays in my head). Please restaurants, if you do not want to charge the cost for real crab, don't want to deal with the hassle of purchasing real crab, or do not think patrons will pay the price for real crab, just take it off the menu all together. Please, I beg you. Fake crab is just plain nasty...really...read how it is made.
